What it’s for
Dairy herds use wheat straw as bulk fibre in total mixed rations when green fodder is scarce or costly. It stretches higher-quality hay and silage without replacing energy concentrates.
How it’s used
- Confirm ration role. Agree inclusion rate with your nutritionist. Wheat straw is high-fibre, modest-protein roughage — not a standalone dairy diet.
- Specify moisture and packing. Request moisture ≤12–15%, bale type (small square or compressed), and indicative 20′/40′ loads before contract.
- Inspect and store dry. Keep bales under cover on pallets or raised floors. Reject wet cores and excessive soil or stone before stacking.
- Chop or process as needed. Many dairies chop straw for TMR mixers. Match chop length to mixer type to avoid sorting.
- Document export lots. For FCL programs, lock phytosanitary and treatment rules early, then stuff with recorded bale count and average weight.
